Chinese Pittosporum
Presentation
Botanical elegance from the East
Forming the centrepiece of many Asian gardens and landscapes, the Chinese Pittosporum, or Pittosporum heterophyllum, is a genuine pearl of the plant world. This enchantingly beautiful and versatile plant species, native to the Far East, brings a dash of exoticism to every environment. And luckily enough, you won’t need to travel across the world to admire it – we are lucky enough to feature it on the Décou’Verte ® botanical footpath of our four-star campsite Les Jardins de La Pascalinette ® in the Var area, French Riviera-Côte d’Azur!
With its shiny green leaves and bright white flowers, Pittosporum heterophyllum adds a touch of refinement to every green space. Its common name, Chinese Pittosporum, refers to its geographical origins, but its appeal extends well beyond the borders of China. Along with its cousins Pittosporum tenuifolium and Variegated Pittosporum, it provides a decorative and deliciously fragrant backdrop to your holiday at our nature campsite!
A genuine source of inspiration
Often planted in hedges on the Mediterranean coast, this is a variety you’re sure to come across during your strolls in Nos Coins de Paradis ® (Our Corners of Paradise). Although less-common than the Pittosporum tobira, its springtime blooms are even more deliciously scented!
There are many anecdotes about this botanical gem. It is said that ancient Chinese warriors used the supple and robust branches of the Chinese Pittosporum to make bows.
What’s more, its aromatic leaves were often used in traditional Chinese medicine for their healing properties.
In addition to its practical uses, this shrub has a special place in Chinese culture and poetry. Its delicate flowers, often symbolizing fleeting beauty and tranquillity, have inspired artists and writers for centuries.
