Discover the heritage of the Var, French Riviera-Côte d'Azur on the island of Porquerolles
Discover the forts of Provence during your seaside camping holiday in Hyères
Enjoy an escapade on Porquerolles island and pay a visit to Fort Sainte Agathe!
Keen to discover every facet of Porquerolles island during your stay at our family campsite Les Jardins de La Pascalinette® in the Var, French Riviera-Côte d’Azur?
In addition to the heavenly beaches you’ll find in our Nos Coins de Paradis® (Our Corners of Paradise) selection, Porquerolles offers a deep dive into a whole chapter of the history of Provence and its defence means.
The remarkable location of this fort, standing over the village, allowed islanders through the ages to survey both the Bay of Hyères and adjacent Provencal coast and ward off bandits and Saracen invasions. In 1531, François decided to add a garrison to the fort to further protect the people of Porquerolles.
Porquerolles heritage on the programme
Now managed by Port-Cros National Park, the fort is the island’s oldest fortification. It has been restored regularly and its 4-metre walls harbour a permanent exhibition on the natural, historic and cultural heritage of Porquerolles.
It has also provided an extension to the Carmignac Foundation exhibition space since 2020.
Unique panoramic views over the Bay of Hyères
Fort Sainte-Agathe’s tower in the form of a cupola is topped with a terrace offering exceptional vistas over the island and Bay of Hyères !
You can opt for a self-guided or guided tour (paying) of the fort lasting around 30 minutes to pierce the secrets of the site. Villa Carmignac ticket holders benefit from reduced rates..
And on your return from Porquerolles, sit back and relax in a sun lounger at the campsite’s delightful water park or on the terrace of your mobile home!
