Abbaye de la Celle, a holiday in the Var, French Riviera-Côte d'Azur
Located less than 45 minutes from our four-star campsite Jardins de La Pascalinette®, the Benedictine monastery of La Celle, or Abbaye de La Celle, was built between the late 12th century and early 13th century.
Boasting characteristic Provencal Romanesque (medieval) architecture, it has been a listed monument since 1886.
Recent archaeological digs have unveiled the presence of another abbey (11th century). The building originally featured a double priory, for monks on one side and nuns on the other. It therefore had two adjacent churches and two cloisters.
Abbaye de la Celle has been the property of the Var Area Council since 1992, in charge of restoring, maintaining and carrying out regular work on the site. Since its reopening in 2016, visitors can enjoy around 700 m² of history there, together with a vast and varied cultural offering including concerts, specialist-interest tours and exhibitions, for a fabulously enriching holiday experience!
